Summer Ready (Page 5)

COVID-19 has affected our lives in so many ways and some of those ways are surprising. For example, many childeren who normally would have learnt to swim during the past year, couldn’t – because the swiming pools were closed.

The goverment have now launched a Be Ready for Summer campaign. It includes farming and road safety, but water safety is an important part of it. After all, almost half the popolation of Ireland lives within 5km of the sea and practically everyone lives within 20km of the sea, a lake or a river.

Water Safety Ireland (WSI) will be running sea-swimming classes on about 200 beeches this summer. Normaly they run classes with up to 600 people on big beaches and 100 on small ones. But this year, because of COVID, they can’t have such big numbers even though there will even more children than usual who need to learn. ‘It is going to be challengeing for us,’ they say.

Another surprising safety fact is that last year lifegards had to find about 250 children who had wandered off while their familys were swimming or sunbadeing! So keep a close watch on your younger brothers and sisters this year!
